If you want to persuade your girlfriend to go mountain biking your going to have to persuade her that it is exciting, and good for her, and you’ll have to get her a bike she’s happy with.

Mountain Biking Benefits

A good way to sell mountain biking to your girlfriend is probably by emphasising the health and fitness benefits of mountain biking. According to a BUPA guide there are a number of health benefits:

• Cycling is good for your heart and health.
• Cycling will help with weight management.
• Cycling can improve your mood.
• Cycling can help to maintain strength and coordination.

Not to mention these obvious benefits there are more specific things like toning of the thighs, calves and backside.

From experience, you’ll also have to persuade her that it’s not that scary! I’m not quite sure how you’ll do that, taking a tandem ride around a gentle lake does not seem to do the trick. So you’ll have to think of something else but emphasise the key elements of bike control and handling.

You’re probably most likely to be able to persuade your girlfriend to go cross country mountain biking rather than say, downhill mountain biking. It’s a little gentler, and at first you’ll probably want to take it slowly but after a while when your girlfriend gets more into it you might be able to take her on some exciting trails.

Choosing A Bike

There are plenty of women’s mountain bikes around but there are a few key things you should take into consideration.

Firstly, you’re going to need to find her a bike that looks pretty. She may not understand all the technical details but she does know that she wants to look good, or at least not so bad, when riding her bike.

Secondly, you want to get her a bike that is comfortable but not too complex. Probably opt for a hardtail – a bike with front suspension only – decent brakes and a comfy saddle.
